FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Fire
Destroys Garage, Damages Home
Windsor CA – Fire destroyed the garage and burned into the attic of
a home on Leafhaven Lane in Windsor Wednesday evening. Windsor Fire
Protection District, along with units from Rincon Valley FPD and
Healdsburg FD, were dispatched at 9:10 pm and arrived to find the
garage fully engulfed. After controlling the fire in the garage, the
fire department used its thermal imaging device and found fire in
the home’s attic. The home suffered substantial smoke and water
damage. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.
“This is a perfect example of the value of a thermal imaging
camera,” said WFPD Battalion Chief Matt Gustafson. “It showed us
fire we could not see. As a result, we could efficiently direct our
suppression efforts and be sure the fire was completely out without
having to damage the home more than absolutely necessary.”
Thermal imaging cameras detect heat, effectively allowing
firefighters to “see” through walls, smoke, etc. WFPD has two
thermal imagers, purchased last year with FEMA grant funding. Each
unit costs $10,000.
The residents were home watching television when they noticed smoke
coming out of their heating vents. The homeowner suffered minor
burns and smoke inhalation and one Rincon Valley firefighter
suffered a facial injury. Damage estimate has been placed at
$125,000.
