FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Windsor Fire Department Hires New Engineer/Firefighter
Windsor CA – Windsor Fire Protection District has hired Windsor
resident Cameron Cornelssen, 23, to fill its vacant
engineer/firefighter position. Cameron, who grew up in Windsor and
graduated from Healdsburg High School, comes to the department from
a four-year stint with the California Department of Forestry and
Fire Prevention, where he held the position of apparatus engineer
and firefighter at the Napa CDF station. Cameron had been a
volunteer engineer with Windsor Fire since June 2001. He was named
Windsor Firefighter of the Year for 2002.
In addition to a number of fire service related certificates,
Cameron holds both an AA and an AS degree from Santa Rosa Junior
College. He is also a certified emergency medical technician (EMT).
“Although Cameron was an excellent volunteer,” said Fire Chief Ron
Collier, “that did not get him this job. He had to go through the
testing process along with the other applicants, several of whom are
great Windsor Fire volunteers. It was a difficult, multi-faceted
test that involved written and physical agility components, as well
as an interview by an oral board.”
As an engineer/firefighter, Cameron will be responsible for
operating the fire engine—a 19-ton rolling tool box—which includes
driving it safely under adverse conditions and operating
sophisticated pumps and equipment that require extensive specialized
training and certification, including the Jaws of Life.
Battalion Chief Matt Gustafson describes Cameron as “a fine young
man who is active in the community, willingly takes on challenging
projects at the fire department, and has proven to be a highly
motivated and dedicated member of the Windsor Fire team.”
Cameron is a second-generation firefighter. His dad, Windsor native
David Cornelssen, is a captain with the Santa Rosa Fire Department
and has been a Windsor Fire volunteer since 1979.
Windsor Fire Protection District is a combination paid/volunteer
fire department that is marking its 40th year of service to the
Windsor community.
