Windsor Fire Department will Conduct Training Burn on May 17 Windsor, CA - The Windsor Fire Protection District will conduct a live-fire training burn on Saturday, May 17, at 6995 Windsor Road. Recruit and entry-level firefighters from the Windsor, Rincon Valley, Valley of the Moon and Forestville fire protection districts and from the Healdsburg Fire Department will participate in the drill. “In Windsor,” said Captain Ron Busch, the officer in charge of the drill, “structure fires account for only about 10 percent of our calls. Consequently, our volunteers have little opportunity to learn from experience. Being able to provide them the reality of a house fire, in a controlled environment, is very valuable.” Another benefit, according to Capt. Busch, is the opportunity for the firefighter from neighboring districts to train together. “Because of our staffing shortages,” he explained, “at least two fire departments respond to any structure fire in this area. So these firefighters will be working together on the fire line and will be better able to do so because of this drill.” The drill will begin at 7:30 Saturday morning and should be completed sometime in the late afternoon. WFPD Battalion Chief Matt Gustafson wants to reassure the neighbors: “We have designed this training exercise to have no impact on the neighbors. Should the conditions on Saturday change and raise the risk of neighborhood inconvenience, we will cancel or terminate the exercise,” he said.
