Windsor Fire Department Recipient of Fireman’s Fund Heritage
Grant
Windsor CA – The Windsor Fire Protection District (WFPD) has
received a $45,000 grant through the Fireman’s Fund Insurance
Company’s HeritageSM grant program.
Windsor Fire is one of seven Sonoma County fire departments sharing
in a total $153,000 in grant funds.
“This is a very welcome gift,” said Ron Collier, WFPD Fire Chief.
“We used these funds to replace all of our outdated radios and the
pagers we use to notify our volunteers of emergency calls. We have
improved firefighter safety and our ability to serve the community.”
Fireman’s Fund Heritage was created as the company’s long-term
philanthropic mission to support firefighters for safer communities.
Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company was founded in San Francisco in
1863 with a commitment to donate ten percent of its profits to the
widows and orphans of the city’s volunteer firefighters. Today
Fireman’s Fund Heritage supports a wide variety of equipment,
training, and education needs. Since 2004 Fireman’s Fund has awarded
more than $4 million in grants and provided thousands of volunteer
hours to fire departments and related organizations throughout the
country.
In addition to the grant, last year three Fireman’s Fund employees
who are Windsor residents spent a day painting fire hydrants and red
curbs in Windsor, tasks that neither the fire department nor the
Town of Windsor is able to devote resources to. Another “Day of
Sharing” is scheduled for this year. Windsor Fire Battalion
Chief/Fire Marshal Matt Gustafson coordinates their efforts. “This
is volunteering in its truest sense. Painting hydrants and curbs in
the hot sun is no fun and doesn’t create lots of public accolade.
There is no immediate reward. But someone’s home could be saved as a
result.”
“Fireman’s Fund has really stepped up to the plate,” Collier
continued. “Fire departments throughout the country are experiencing
funding difficulties, often unable to buy equipment that literally
is life-saving and frequently having to eliminate important
education and maintenance programs. Windsor Fire is no exception.
The value of the Fireman’s Fund donations—both time and money—can’t
be overstated.”
Windsor Fire Protection District is a combination paid/volunteer
fire department that serves 30,000 in 30 square miles that include 5
square miles of the Town of Windsor and 25 square miles of
surrounding unincorporated area. The department responded to 1884
calls for service in 2004. For more information, call (707) 838-1170
