Fire Department Remembers 9/11
Windsor CA – As they have every September 11 since 2002, members of
the Windsor and Rincon Valley fire protection districts gathered at
Windsor Fire Protection District Station 1 on Monday, September 11,
2006, for a ceremony to honor the memory of those whose lives were
taken on September 11, 2001, and to honor all who continue to serve.
Windsor resident Diane Bruce, whose youngest son, Mark Bruce, 40,
was at his office on the 104th floor of Tower 2 when the first plane
struck, took part in the ceremony, as did her son David Bruce of
Santa Rosa.
The ceremony began with three fire engines pulling out onto the
station driveway, symbolizing the emergency response that fateful
morning. Following opening remarks by Battalion Chief Matt Gustafson
and WFPD chaplain Billy Bland, a minute of silence was observed at
7:03, the time of the first tower collapse. Each person in
attendance read aloud the names of 10 New York Fire Department
members who perished, until all 343 names had been read. An
additional minute of silence was observed at 7:28, the time of the
second tower collapse. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the
attendees enjoyed breakfast prepared by the department’s staff.
We will never forget…
