FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Windsor CA – The Sonoma County Probation Department joined forces
with the Windsor Fire Protection District, a local developer, and
the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) on a recent Saturday, to
clean up a section of railroad track that has been the site of a
number of recent arson fires. The Probation Department provided a
crew of eight (who were serving community service sentences) and a
supervisor who removed trash, lumber, old tires, discarded furniture
and other items along a stretch of the tracks from Windsor River
Road to Starr Road. Windsor Fire Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal Matt
Gustafson coordinated their efforts and participated in the
clean-up.
Homeowners in the area have become increasingly nervous because of
the number and frequency of fires along the tracks—five in a
two-week period.
“We are especially grateful to everyone who participated, helping
the fire department mitigate a dangerous condition,” said Windsor
Fire Chief Ron Collier. “Our limited staffing makes it impossible
for us to address these issues ourselves. We plan to seek assistance
in clearing the area next year as well.”
Windsor Fire Protection District is a combination paid/volunteer
fire department serving 30,000 in 30 square miles. They responded to
1900 calls in 2005.
