4th of July Safety
Each
year we receive many inquiries regarding use of fireworks,
sparklers, etc. All fireworks, including “safe and sane”
fireworks and sparklers, are illegal in all the Town of Windsor and
in all unincorporated areas of Sonoma County. As the following
information from the
National Fire Protection Association demonstrates, fireworks are
dangerous to both people and property.
In Windsor, the dangers associated with grass/brush fires are
especially acute. We have two people on duty at Old Redwood Highway
and Hembree Lane. If a grass fire breaks out on Limerick Lane or
Chalk Hill Road or some other remote area of our District, we cannot
get adequate resources there in time to keep a small fire from
becoming a big fire. This year the conditions are worse than usual
because the weeds and grasses are so tall as a result of the
excessive rainfall this past winter and spring. And if it happens to
be a very hot, windy day, we are faced with a very serious
situation.
We will appreciate your helping us keep the community safe by
refraining from using fireworks and by reporting the use of
fireworks to the police department. Enjoy any of the many local
municipal fireworks shows, and have a safe holiday.
