Monthly Safety Message: Time to Mow Your Weeds

Time to Mow Your Weeds

Is Your Home Safe? Weeds and high grasses are drying rapidly. Temperatures are rising and Windsor has experienced a number of single-digit humidity days. And the 4th of July is just around the corner.

Property owners are responsible for eliminating any fire danger that exists on their property. Within the Town of Windsor limits, all combustible vegetation must be cleared to 30 feet from any structure, including fences. In the urban/wildland interface, 100 feet of clearance (defensible space) is required around any structure.

Mow Safely
On May 10, 2009, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, “Investigators say the Santa Barbara County wildfire that has scorched 13 square miles and destroyed dozens of homes was apparently sparked by a power tool used to clear vegetation.”

When mowing weeds, it is imperative it be done safely: One small spark from a mower blade hitting a rock can result in a big fire. All mowing should be done early in the morning, while temperatures are low, humidity is high, and grasses are still damp with dew.

Fire Isn’t the Only Liability
Property owners face significant financial liability if a fire starts in high grasses/weeds on their property: All of the costs associated with the fire department putting it out, as well as any damage done to neighboring properties.

In addition, the Fire Department, on the authority of the Town of Windsor fire code ordinance, can issue a citation that carries with it a $100 per day fine for each day that passes until the property is in compliance.

Help the Fire Department protect your family, your property, and the families and properties around you. Mow now. Mow safely. Mow early in the day.
