Monthly Safety Message: Use Caution with Turkey Fryers

Use Caution with Turkey FryersUse Caution with Turkey Fryers

Turkey fryers are not all they are cooked up to be. If you are unfamiliar with these fryers, they resemble a large commercial aluminum coffee pot. They are often filled with oil, which is then heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or more. The turkey is placed in the oil to fry.

Although we do not recommend the use of these fryers, we understand many enjoy back yard (or front yard) cooking, as well as the savory taste these fryers produce. However, these fryers have resulted in house fires and personal injuries, primarily due to improper use. Oftentimes, these fryers tip over, which spills and splatters the hot oil being used to fry the turkey.

Safety Tips

  • Don’t overfill the pot, as oil may spill over the side of the pot when the turkey is submerged.
  • The sides of pots, the lid and the handles can get hot, causing severe burns. Use well-insulated oven mitts when touching the pot or lid handles. Consider wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes.
  • Always use fryers outdoors at a safe distance from buildings and vegetation – not in a garage or on a wooden deck.
  • Place the fryer on a flat surface to reduce any chances of it tipping over.
  • Never leave the fryer unattended.
  • Never allow children or pets near the fryer when in use.
  • Ensure the turkey is completely thawed before placing in the oil.
  • Have a dry chemical fire extinguisher on hand to douse potential fires. Never use water to extinguish an oil-based fire.
